Common questions
What is a BMP file?
BMP, short for bitmap, is one of the oldest picture formats on Windows. It stores every pixel without compression, so the files are large. Paint, older scanners and some screen-capture tools save BMP files, and most programs still open them.
Why are my BMP files so big?
A BMP stores the colour of every pixel with no compression at all. A 3000 by 2000 picture takes about 18 MB. Putting it in a PDF as a PNG keeps every pixel, and for drawings and scans the file gets much smaller. Your original BMP file is not changed.
Does converting BMP to PDF lose quality?
No. Your browser reads the BMP and we save it in the PDF as a PNG, which keeps every pixel exactly. The PDF looks the same as the BMP. Only the size changes, because PNG squeezes the picture without throwing any detail away.
Which kinds of BMP can I use?
The common ones: BMP files from Paint, Windows screenshots and scanners, at 24-bit colour and most other depths. Your browser does the reading, so a BMP it can show can be converted. If a file cannot be read, the page says so and names the file.
Can I put several BMP files in one PDF?
Yes. Add as many pictures as you like and put them in order. Each one becomes its own page. You can mix BMP files with JPG, PNG, WebP and other pictures in the same PDF.
Is my file uploaded when I use BMP to PDF?
No. Your pictures are read and placed into the PDF in your browser. The file is not sent to our servers.
Is BMP to PDF free, and are there limits?
You can use it free. You get 2 free uses in total, no account needed. Free files can be up to 50 MB. Pro has no limit on uses and allows files up to 500 MB. We check the limits before a use starts, so a finished file is never held back.
Can I use BMP to PDF on a Windows PC?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome or Edge on your PC, add your file and download the result. Nothing to install, and your file stays on your device.

How to convert BMP to PDF in 3 steps

How do I convert BMP to PDF?
Add your pictures to BMP to PDF, drag them into the order you want, choose a page size and download one PDF. Each picture becomes a page. The files are read in your browser and are not sent to our servers, so they never leave your device.
How do I convert a Paint picture to PDF?
Save the picture from Paint as BMP, or as PNG or JPG, then add it to BMP to PDF and download the PDF. Paint can save all three. Each picture becomes one page, and you can add more pictures first to make a PDF of several pages.
Why does my scanner save BMP files?
Some older scanners and scanner programs use BMP because it is simple and every program can read it. The files are large, so a scan of a few pages can run to many megabytes. Turning them into one PDF here makes a single file that is much easier to email.
Will my BMP to PDF file be smaller?
Often, and by a lot for drawings and scans. A BMP is stored with no compression, while the PDF holds the picture as a PNG, which squeezes flat areas and repeated colours. A photo shrinks less, and may not shrink at all. Compress PDF can shrink the finished file further.
Is it safe to convert BMP to PDF online?
With BMP to PDF, your pictures are read and placed into the PDF inside your browser and are not sent to our servers. That makes it a good fit for scans of IDs, receipts, signed pages and other private papers. You can check this in your browser's network tab.
Can I convert BMP to PDF for free?
Yes. You get 2 free uses in total with no account, and one conversion counts as one use. Free files can be up to 50 MB each. Pro has no limit on uses and allows files up to 500 MB. The limit is checked before the conversion starts.
Can I mix BMP and JPG pictures in one PDF?
Yes. Add BMP, JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and TIFF pictures in any order, and each becomes one page. The page tells the type by the contents, not by the name. A mixed set is handy when a scanner, a phone and a screen capture all gave you pictures.
Does BMP to PDF work on a phone?
Yes. Open BMP to PDF in your phone's browser, choose the pictures from your files, and download the PDF. It all runs on the phone, so nothing is uploaded. A very large BMP is read at up to about 16 megapixels, so phones can handle it.
Does a BMP keep a see-through background?
Most BMP files have no see-through areas, so the picture fills the page as it is. For a BMP that does carry transparency, it shows the white page behind it. If you need transparency kept for other uses, a PNG is the better format to keep.
Can I turn a BMP into a JPG instead?
This page makes PDFs. To get a JPG from a BMP, open the picture in Paint or Photos and save it as JPG. To turn a PDF back into pictures, use PDF to JPG. Every step runs in your browser, and your pictures stay on your device.
