Common questions

What kinds of form fields work?

Text fields (single and multi-line), checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns and option lists. Buttons and signature fields are skipped. To sign, use Sign PDF.

What if my PDF has no fillable fields?

The tool tells you there are no fields. You can still type anywhere on the page, draw boxes and add pictures with Edit PDF.

Why does it say my form cannot be filled in the browser?

Some forms use an older dynamic format (XFA) that browsers cannot fill. We say so instead of saving a broken copy. Opening such a form in the program that made it is the usual way around it.

What does flatten mean?

Flattening makes your answers part of the page, so they cannot be changed or lost when the file is opened in another program. Keep fillable leaves the fields live so you or someone else can edit them later.

Can I fill government or tax forms here?

You can type into the fields of any form PDF that has them. We do not tell you which form you need or what to enter. For that, follow the instructions from the agency that issued the form, or ask a professional.

Is my file uploaded when I use Fill PDF?

No. Your answers are typed into the form in your browser. The file is not sent to our servers.

Is Fill PDF free, and are there limits?

You can use it free. Without an account you get 2 tasks a day, and a free account (just an email address) raises that to 10. Free files can be up to 50 MB. Pro removes the daily limit and allows files up to 500 MB. We check the limits before a task starts, so a finished file is never held back.
