## Common questions

### What is a visitor log used for?

A visitor log records who was in your building and when. Businesses use it for security, so they know who has been on site, and for a fire roll call, so they can check that everyone is out. It can also help show that a visitor was told about site rules, if you add a purpose and a host.

### What is the difference between a visitor log and a sign in sheet?

A sign in sheet is a short list that visitors fill in themselves. A visitor log records more about each visit: the purpose, a badge or pass number, and the initials of the person who checked the visitor in. If you only need names and times, the sign in sheet is enough.

### How long should I keep a visitor log?

It depends on your industry, your contracts and your insurer, and local law may set limits on keeping personal details. There is no single answer. Keep the log in a secure place, share it with as few people as you can, and delete it when you no longer need it. Ask a lawyer about your own case.

### Does a visitor log have to be filled in by the visitor?

No. Some desks have visitors write their own line, and others have the receptionist fill it in. The column for the front desk's initials shows who checked each visitor in. Every box is optional, so choose what your desk needs and leave the rest blank.

### Can other visitors read what I wrote on a paper visitor log?

Yes, on paper or a shared screen, each visitor can read the lines above theirs. Having the front desk fill in the log helps, as does a cover card over earlier lines or a fresh page each day. PDFinish never sees what is typed in the file.

### Is this template free?

Filling it in is free, and you do not need an account. You type your answers in your browser and download the finished PDF. The blank PDF is free to download once; after that, Pro, Lifetime and Team unlock every blank template.

### What if I only want the blank PDF?

One blank download is free for each visitor. After that, Pro gives you every blank template, plus unlimited uses. You can still fill any template in free.

### Does PDFinish see what I type?

Not while you fill it in. The template opens and fills in your browser. If you ask us to email the finished file, it goes through our server, stays encrypted for 7 days so the link works, and is then deleted.
