# How to rotate a PDF and save it that way

> To rotate a PDF and save it, add the file to Rotate PDF, turn all pages or single pages with the arrows, check the thumbnails, and download the new copy. The turn is written into the file itself, so it opens the same way in other viewers and prints correctly.

You open a PDF and a page is sideways. You rotate it in your viewer, close the file, and next time it is sideways again. Or you email it, and the other person sees it the wrong way up. This is one of the most common PDF annoyances, and the cause is simple.

Most viewers have a Rotate view button that only changes how you see the page right now. It does not change the file. To make the turn stick, you have to save a new copy in which the page itself is turned. [Rotate PDF](https://pdfinish.com/rotate-pdf) does that.

## Why the turn does not stick

There are two different things people call rotating a PDF.

- Rotating the view. This changes your screen only, usually for the session. The file is untouched, so nobody else sees the change.
- Rotating the page. This writes a new turn into the file. It is saved, shared and printed with the file.

A PDF stores each page's turn as a setting on the page, in steps of a quarter turn. When you save the page's turn, that setting is changed, and any standard viewer or printer follows it. Nothing is redrawn, so the text and pictures stay exactly as sharp as before.

## Rotate and save in four steps

1. Open [Rotate PDF](https://pdfinish.com/rotate-pdf) and add your file. You see a thumbnail of every page, and the file is not uploaded.
2. Turn everything at once with the buttons at the top, or use the arrows under a single page to turn just that one.
3. Look at the thumbnails. They show each page the way it will be saved, so you can catch a page you turned the wrong way.
4. Download the corrected PDF. Your original file is not changed.

## Fixing just one page in a mixed file

Mixed files are common. A multi-page scan may have most pages upright and one that went through the scanner sideways. If you turn the whole document, you fix one page and break the rest. Use the arrows under the one bad page instead, and leave the others alone.

The same goes for a packet built from several sources. If you merged a contract, a photo and a form, the photo page is often the sideways one. You can fix it after the merge, or before, with the same tool.

## Check that it really saved

Do this once and you will trust the result from then on.

1. Open the downloaded file, not the original.
2. Look at each page you turned. They should be upright.
3. Open the file in a second program, such as your email preview or another viewer. It should look the same.
4. Print one page to PDF or paper if the orientation matters for printing.

If the second program shows the old orientation, you are most likely looking at the original file, or at a cached preview. Open the new copy by its file name.

## What to do when rotation is not the problem

- The page is upright but small or wide. The page size is the issue, not the turn. A page can be landscape and still be set up for a portrait printer.
- A scanned page is slightly tilted. Rotating works in quarter turns, so a slight tilt needs a re-scan.
- The file asks for a password. Open it with [Unlock PDF](https://pdfinish.com/unlock-pdf), using the password you were given, then rotate the unlocked copy.
- A page is in the wrong place. Use [Organize PDF](https://pdfinish.com/organize-pdf) to reorder it.

## Pages that began as phone photos

Phones store which way they were held when you took a photo. When you build a PDF from photos with [JPG to PDF](https://pdfinish.com/jpg-to-pdf), that stored orientation is read, so the pages usually come out the right way up. If one still looks wrong, for example a photo taken flat on a table, build the PDF first and then turn that page with Rotate PDF. It is faster to fix one page afterward than to retake the photo.

Turns come in quarter steps, so one press moves a page 90 degrees and an upside-down page needs two. The thumbnail updates as you go, which makes it easy to stop at the right place.

## A worked example

A landlord scans a lease on a home scanner. Pages one to five come out upright, but page six, a signed addendum, is sideways. She adds the file to Rotate PDF, turns only page six with the arrow under its thumbnail, and checks the preview. She downloads the file, opens it in her email program to be sure, and sends it to the tenant.

## Habits that prevent the problem

- Feed pages into a scanner the same way every time.
- Check the thumbnails before you merge files into a packet.
- Save the corrected file under a new name, such as lease-fixed.pdf, so you do not mix it up with the original.

Free files can be up to 50 MB, and your 2 free uses in total need no account. ## Common questions

### How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Use Rotate PDF, turn the pages, and download the new copy. The turn is written into the file, so it stays the same in other viewers.

### Why does my PDF go back to sideways when I reopen it?

Your viewer's Rotate view button changes only what you see. To change the file, save a new copy with the page turned.

### Can I rotate only one page?

Yes. Use the arrows under that page's thumbnail, or the buttons at the top to turn every page.

### Does rotating reduce quality?

No. The pages are not redrawn. Only the page's turn setting changes, so text and images stay as sharp as they were.

### Is my PDF uploaded when I rotate it?

Not with PDFinish. Rotate PDF turns the pages in your browser, so the file stays on your device.
