# How to combine bank statements into one PDF

> Add your statement PDFs to a merge tool, put them in date order, and download one combined file; unlock any password-protected statement first with the password you were given. PDFinish merges in your browser, so your statements are not uploaded and your originals stay unchanged.

A lender, a landlord, an accountant or a school office asks for a few months of bank statements. The upload box takes one PDF. Your bank gave you a separate file for every month. This guide shows how to join them into one tidy document, in the right order, without sending your statements to a stranger's server.

The quick method uses [Merge PDF](https://pdfinish.com/merge-pdf), which runs in your browser. The statements are read and joined on your own device. This is general information about handling PDF files, not financial advice. Follow the instructions of whoever asked for the statements.

## Three checks before you start

- Use the real PDFs. Banks usually let you view a statement on screen and download it as a separate step. Download the file. A screenshot or a printed web page is not a statement.
- Look for passwords. Some statements ask for a password to open. Merge needs files it can read, so open each one first. If one is locked, use [Unlock PDF](https://pdfinish.com/unlock-pdf) with the password you were given. It only works with a password you already have. We never crack or bypass protection.
- Read what was asked. If the request says every page, send every page, even ones with only small print. Do not remove pages unless the instructions say you may.

## Name the files so they sort

This small step saves a lot of dragging. Put the year first, then the month as two digits, then a short word.

Computers sort names alphabetically. If you name files with the month's name alone, August comes before July, and April comes before everything. Numbers put your months in true date order in the file picker and on your desktop.

## Combine the statements in four steps

1. Add your files. Choose all the statements at once, or add them one at a time. You can add more at any point.
2. Put them in order. Drag the files until the oldest month is first, or the newest if the request asks for that. Remove any file you added by mistake.
3. Merge and download. Press merge, then save the combined file. Your original statements are not changed, so the monthly files stay safe in their folder.
4. Check the result. Open the new PDF and scroll through it. Look at the point where one month ends and the next begins.

## A worked example

Say you have statements for July, August and September, and for this example they run 3, 4 and 3 pages. The merged file should have 10 pages. Page 1 of the August statement should come right after the last page of July.

If your count is off, one file was left out or added twice. Fix it by running the merge again with the right files. Do this check every time. It takes under a minute, and it catches the mistake before the other person does.

The page numbers printed by your bank, such as Page 1 of 3, will restart for each month. That is normal. Merging copies the pages as they are and does not change what is printed on them. If you want one running number across the whole file, [Add page numbers](https://pdfinish.com/add-page-numbers) can put it on every page.

## Oldest first or newest first?

Follow the request. If it does not say, oldest first is the easiest to read, because the balance carries on from one month to the next like a story. Whichever you choose, keep the same order for the whole file.

## If the file is too big to upload

Statements are mostly text, so they are usually small. Scanned statements are different, because each page is a photo. Free files can be up to 50 MB each, and Pro allows up to 500 MB. Portals set their own limits, so read the number they give you.

If you need a smaller file, use [Compress PDF](https://pdfinish.com/compress-pdf) and start with Balanced, which keeps text as text. Avoid Strong for statements. It turns pages into pictures, so the text can no longer be selected or searched, and small numbers can look soft. Our guide [why your PDF is so big](https://pdfinish.com/blog/why-is-my-pdf-so-big) explains the trade-offs.

## Hiding an account number

Ask first. Some requests need the statements untouched, and a changed statement may not be accepted. If the other person says you can hide details, do not crop the page or draw a black rectangle on top. The text underneath is still in the file.

[Redact PDF](https://pdfinish.com/redact-pdf) redraws each marked page as a picture with the boxes painted in, so what was under them is removed. Look at every page of the result before you send it.

## Why privacy matters here

A bank statement lists your name, address, account details and every purchase. Many online mergers upload your files to a server so they can join them. PDFinish does it in your browser tab, so the statements do not leave your device. Whatever tool you use, read how it treats your files before you add something this private.

On a shared or work computer, delete the combined file from the downloads folder when you are done.

## A short checklist

- Download the real PDF for each month.
- Name the files with the year and month first.
- Unlock any locked file with the password you were given.
- Merge in the order the request asks for.
- Check the total page count and the point where each month joins.
- Compress with Balanced only if the file is too big.
- Delete the combined copy from a shared computer.

Free to start: 2 free uses in total, no account needed. If you handle statements for clients, [PDFinish for bookkeepers](https://pdfinish.com/for-bookkeepers) shows how the tools fit together.

A long combined file is easier to move around with bookmarks. See [how to add bookmarks to a PDF](https://pdfinish.com/blog/can-i-add-bookmarks-to-a-pdf).

## Common questions

### How do I combine bank statements into one PDF?

Add the statement PDFs to Merge PDF, drag them into date order, press merge and download the combined file. It runs in your browser, so the statements stay on your device.

### Can I merge password-protected bank statements?

Unlock each one first with Unlock PDF, using the password you were given. Then merge the unlocked copies. Your original files stay as they were.

### Will merging change my bank statements?

No. Pages are copied across as they are, not turned into pictures, so text stays sharp and searchable. Your original files are not changed.

### Should I put the oldest or newest statement first?

Follow whoever asked for the statements. If they do not say, oldest first is easiest to read. Keep one order all the way through.

### Is it safe to merge bank statements online?

It depends on the tool. Many upload your files to a server. PDFinish merges in your browser, so your statements are not uploaded. Check how any tool handles files before you add private ones.

### How do I reorder pages after merging PDFs?

Open the merged file in Organize PDF, drag the pages into the order you want, rotate or remove any you do not need, and download the result. You can also go back to Merge PDF and reorder the original files before you merge again.

### Can I merge more than 50 MB of PDFs?

Yes. The tool sets no limit on how many files you join. Each file can be up to 50 MB on a free use and 500 MB with Pro. The practical limit is your device's memory, so a very large merge can be slow on a phone.

### How do I combine PDFs into one file for email?

Join the files with Merge PDF, then run the result through Compress PDF if it is too big to attach. One merged file is easier to send than a dozen statements. Keep the originals, because the merged copy is a convenient copy, not a replacement.

### What is the difference between merge and combine PDF?

There is none. Merge, combine and join all mean putting the pages of two or more PDFs into one file, and Merge PDF does it in your browser. If you want only some pages, use Extract Pages first. If you want to pull a file apart, use Split PDF.

## Try it

- [Merge PDF](https://pdfinish.com/merge-pdf): Combine several PDFs into one file, in the order you choose.
- [Unlock PDF](https://pdfinish.com/unlock-pdf): Remove the password from a PDF you already have the password for.
- [Compress PDF](https://pdfinish.com/compress-pdf): Shrink a PDF so it is easier to email and upload.
- [Redact PDF](https://pdfinish.com/redact-pdf): Black out words or areas for good, so the hidden text and pictures are really removed.
